The Unity of UK Psychic Surgeons
How a National Organisation Was Formed
The story of the Unity of UK Psychic Surgeons began in December 2007, at a time when practitioners of psychic surgery were facing increasing uncertainty. On 14th December 2007, Nina Knowland was guided by one of her healing guides, Harry Edwards, to reach out to other psychic surgeons across the UK with the intention of forming a united group.
At that time, there was growing concern surrounding new legislation for mediums and psychics that was due to come into effect in April 2008. Nina recognised that, while psychic surgeons worked ethically and responsibly under spiritual guidance, there was no formal governing body, no shared voice, and no structured support network to help practitioners navigate potential legal and professional challenges.
Nina first contacted psychic surgeon Gary Mannion, suggesting that a collective group should be formed. Two days later, on 16th December 2007, she contacted psychic surgeon Andrew Porter, writing:
“We have no qualifications or governing body for the work we do, and we know we don’t need that — we follow our guides. But our work could be made difficult to practice, and it is my thought that if we formed a group of some kind, we would all be aware of what is happening and stand together on our rights to practise our gift of healing in this way.”
The following day, 17th December 2007, Nina reached out to Stephen Turoff, another respected figure in spiritual healing. Stephen responded with empathy, acknowledging how challenging the path could be, especially for those just beginning their work. He expressed the need for a group where genuinely gifted healers could find support and guidance. While Stephen ultimately felt unable to lead such an initiative himself, his response reinforced Nina’s sense that a support organisation was deeply needed.
At this point, Nina realised that the responsibility for forming such a group had fallen to her. Continued discussions took place between Nina, Andy, and Gary, and the idea rapidly evolved from a simple support group into something much larger.
On 2nd February 2008, Nina contacted Geoff Ward at the Western Daily Press to arrange a meeting. This led to a pivotal moment on 19th February 2008, when Nina Knowland, Andrew Porter, and Gary Mannion met together for the first time at the newspaper offices in Bristol, UK. What began as an informal meeting marked the birth of an organisation rather than just a group.
Guidance from Harry Edwards became increasingly clear and directive. The organisation was to be established to a standard comparable with recognised bodies such as the NFSH. At the time, Nina was unaware that the NFSH itself had been founded by Harry Edwards. It was only later, through discussions with researcher Tricia Robertson, that this connection came to light.
Harry Edwards worked closely with Nina over many weeks, often into the early hours of the morning, offering firm and structured guidance. He emphasised that the organisation must operate within the law, be transparent, and be acceptable to other recognised healing organisations. Under this guidance, the foundations were laid for a Code of Conduct, Code of Practice, and Disclaimer, ensuring that psychic surgery could be practised responsibly, ethically, and legally.
On 25th March 2008, the organisation’s name and website domain were agreed, and the website www.ukpsychicsurgeons.org.uk was created. Shortly afterwards, on the evening of 6th April 2008, the three founding members met over a celebratory meal. Andy Porter later described the evening as having “good energetic energy,” reflecting a sense of shared purpose and achievement.
The following day, 7th April 2008, the website officially went live.
On 8th April 2008, Andy Porter began enquiring about professional insurance on behalf of the organisation. Just one day later, on 9th April 2008, Nina received confirmation from the insurance company that psychic surgery practitioners had been accepted for cover.
For the first time in the UK, psychic surgery was formally recognised as a legal alternative therapy, allowing practitioners to obtain professional insurance and practise with greater confidence and protection.
Ongoing Role and Legacy
Today, Andy Porter continues to run and maintain the Unity of UK Psychic Surgeons website (UUPS) https://www.ukpsychicsurgeons.org.uk, ensuring that the original vision of support, integrity, and connection remains alive. He remains actively involved in linking UK-based psychic surgeons, offering guidance, continuity, and a point of reference for practitioners working in this specialised field.
The Unity of UK Psychic Surgeons stands as a milestone in the recognition, protection, and professional support of psychic surgery in the UK, born from spiritual guidance, collaboration, and a shared commitment to ethical healing.
